A parachute is not a permission slip. It is an aircraft modification that must fit a specific operational plan.
DJI says its AP100 is designed for the Matrice 400 and uses independent power, redundant links, and manual and automatic deployment. The manufacturer lists a response time under 600 milliseconds and a descent rate below 5 meters per second. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent field-test results.
DJI also says the Matrice 400 and AP100 combination supports specified EASA C5/C6 and UK CAA UK5/UK6 operating paths. That statement belongs in its European and UK context. It does not create U.S. authority to fly over people, moving vehicles, or beyond visual line of sight.
For a U.S. contractor, the FAA operating rule still controls. Part 107 operations over people must satisfy the applicable category and operating requirements or use an appropriate waiver. BVLOS work generally requires specific FAA authority. The FAA has also explained that a parachute-equipped aircraft can support a waiver safety case without the agency separately “certifying” the parachute itself.
What changes when the AP100 is installed?
DJI’s Matrice 400 FAQ notes a meaningful tradeoff: mounting the AP100 disables the aircraft’s downward and backward millimeter-wave radars to prevent deployment obstruction and false sensing. That limits detection of some small obstacles behind and below the aircraft. A crew must account for the altered sensing configuration in route design, takeoff and landing control, obstacle clearance, and the go/no-go decision.
Contractor acceptance checklist
Before placing the combination into service, document:
- The exact Matrice 400 aircraft, AP100 unit, firmware versions, and compatible installation hardware.
- Installed weight, payload configuration, balance, and any effect on endurance.
- The manufacturer’s installation steps and every post-installation self-check.
- The available manual and automatic deployment modes, crew responsibilities, and abort criteria.
- The radar functions disabled by installation and the compensating operating procedures.
- Status indications, alerts, backup-power condition, and link checks.
- Inspection intervals, packing or service requirements, storage limits, and component life limits from the current manual.
- A controlled acceptance test that does not expose people or property to unnecessary risk.
- A log entry tying the unit, aircraft, inspection, and responsible technician to the mission record.
Mission planning
Start with the intended operation, not the accessory. Define who may be beneath the route, whether the flight would be sustained over an open-air assembly, whether controlled airspace is involved, whether VLOS can be maintained, and which FAA rule or authorization applies. Then determine whether the aircraft-parachute combination is part of a defensible mitigation strategy.
Put the modified obstacle-sensing profile into the site plan. Avoid routes that depend on rear or downward radar to catch small obstacles. Establish a clear launch and recovery area, an emergency descent area where practicable, and a procedure for securing the scene after any deployment.
Client documentation
A professional proposal should describe the specific aircraft configuration, applicable operating authority, inspection status, crew duties, limitations, and abort triggers. Do not market European or UK classifications as FAA approval. Do not promise that a parachute eliminates ground risk. Explain what the equipment can do, what it changes, and which controls remain necessary.
The useful business advantage is disciplined documentation: configuration control, maintenance records, a trained crew, and a mission plan that matches actual authority.
