Drone delivery can create adjacent work, but an independent pilot should not confuse a possible support scope with authority to operate a delivery network—or with a confirmed procurement opportunity.
The FAA says commercial U.S. drone package-delivery operators use the Part 135 certification process and must obtain the certificates, exemptions, waivers, operating specifications, and airspace authorizations applicable to their operation. Part 107 can cover many ordinary commercial flights, but it does not by itself reproduce a scaled Part 135 delivery operation.
Amazon says Prime Air holds a Part 135 air-carrier certificate and has received additional FAA authority for BVLOS operations. Amazon’s public material describes mapped delivery zones, designated delivery points, obstacle checks, weather limits, detect-and-avoid systems, and procedures for contingent landings. Those facts show the maturity of the operating system. They do not show that Amazon or any other operator is hiring outside drone contractors.
Treat support work as a procurement question
Before building a proposal, confirm that an operator, facility owner, engineering firm, or prime contractor actually needs the service. Ask:
- Who owns the scope and who can authorize the work?
- Is the deliverable advisory documentation, a facility inspection, a mapping product, maintenance activity, or participation in flight operations?
- Which certificate holder controls any delivery flight?
- What training, background checks, insurance, equipment, data security, and record formats are required?
- Does the work touch safety-critical equipment or procedures?
- Who accepts the deliverable, and what are the measurable acceptance criteria?
Do not advertise as an approved vendor, delivery operator, maintenance provider, or flight-operations team without a written basis.
Support scopes that can be defined clearly
Site documentation may include current orthomosaics, obstacle inventories, roof and pad imagery, access-route photographs, or change detection. A useful scope states the coordinate reference, ground-sample distance if relevant, capture date, coverage boundaries, file formats, and known limitations.
Facility inspection may document fencing, pads, drainage, vegetation, rooftop equipment, lighting, or visible storm damage. Keep observations within the contractor’s competence. Aerial imagery is evidence for the responsible engineer, maintainer, or operator; it is not an airworthiness determination.
Change verification can compare approved baseline imagery with current conditions after construction, landscaping, or severe weather. Specify the comparison method and escalation threshold instead of promising that a site is “safe.”
Community-facing media can explain visible infrastructure or a demonstration, but only with approved messaging and permissions. Avoid claims about noise, privacy, performance, or safety that the operator has not substantiated.
Flight-operation support requires a sharper boundary. Visual-observer, recovery, or field-response duties must sit inside the certificate holder’s approved procedures, training, supervision, and communications plan. A remote pilot certificate alone does not make a contractor qualified for a role in a specific Part 135 system.
Build a bid that can be audited
A strong proposal names the location, scope, inputs, exclusions, flight authority, data-handling rules, delivery schedule, acceptance criteria, and change-control process. It identifies controlled airspace, property access, people and vehicle exposure, and any need for nighttime or BVLOS authority without assuming approval.
For imagery, include a file index, date and time, coordinate reference where used, flight logs, and a concise exceptions report. For recurring work, use the same viewpoints and naming convention so changes can be compared. For incident or contingent-landing documentation, follow the operator’s scene-control and evidence procedures; do not improvise recovery work.
Red flags
Pause before bidding if the client cannot identify the certificate holder, asks you to “use your Part 107” for BVLOS delivery, expects access to restricted systems without training, wants a safety conclusion outside your qualifications, or cannot define who approves the work.
The opportunity is not “drone delivery jobs” in the abstract. It is a specific, contracted deliverable that fits inside an authorized operating system. Contractors who verify that boundary before mobilizing protect the client, the public, and their own business.

Can a Part 107 pilot start a Prime Air-style delivery service?
Part 107 alone is not the operating framework the FAA uses for scaled commercial package-delivery networks. The applicable Part 135 certification, exemptions, waivers, operating specifications, and airspace approvals matter.
Does Amazon’s public expansion mean it hires local drone contractors?
No such inference is justified. A contractor should rely on an actual solicitation, vendor channel, or written request.
Can an outside pilot inspect a delivery facility?
